German Wine

German wine is traditionally all about sweet wines but this is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to great wine from Germany. The cool, wet climate of Germany means for a long ripening season. The grapes grown here are high in acidity and packed with intense flavour as a result of this.

Delicious, food-friendly white wines like Riesling and Pinot Gris (a more floral, full-bodied version of Pinot Grigio), dominate the German wine scene. In terms of red wines, Pinot Noir, otherwise known as Spätburgunder is also particularly good.

Germany has many important winemaking regions, most of which lie to the west of the country. This includes the Rheinhessen, the largest winemaking region, the warmer climate of Pfalz and the Mosel, infamous for its great quality Riesling.
