The Silex 2023 is a blend of 39% Chardonnay, 28% Pinot Blanc, 17% Pinot Gris and 16% Pinot Noir, all hand-harvested from specially selected plots. The Chardonnay comes from Martin's Lane in Crouch Valley, Essex, whilst the rest of the grapes come from Whitewolfe in Kent and Flint's own vineyards in Norfolk. This blend of grapes might seem unusual if you’re only used to seeing Pinot Noir in red wines, but this red grape variety can be used to make white wines with great finesse when handled carefully. And that is exactly what winemaker Ben Witchell has done, carefully vinifying and then ageing this blend for 12 months in a mix of neutral and new oak barrels to add complexity. The winemaking was deliberately hands off, allowing the grapes to shine and help make the decisions. The result is boldly fruit-forward, subtly nuanced, textured, and overall an elegant continuation of the Silex line.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Ben Witchell
Ben’s interest in wine began as a desire to learn more about the wines of the world, but it quickly became an obsession, then a lifelong passion. This led him to quit his job in IT and find out how to become a winemaker. Ben wanted to do this properly and soon realised that he would need to study in order to learn the ropes quickly and extensively enough. He moved to Sussex and enrolled into a three-year degree in Oenology and Viticulture at Plumpton College. This greatly influenced his approach to wine, giving him a respect for and fascination of the winemaking science.
After graduating from college in 2012 with a first class degree and achieving awards for Best Research Project and Top Winemaking Student, Ben moved to Beaujolais, France, where he secured his first winemaking post. Here, he learnt how to 'throw out the rule book' and experienced a more intuitive and creative side to winemaking. After two years it was time to return home and begin a new life making wine in England, where he established Flint Vineyard in Norfolk. Since then, Flint Vineyard has flourished. There are now over 26,000 vines covering six hectares, and a state-of-the-art winery allows for wine production at the highest level. Flint has gained a solid reputation for producing some of the best premium English wines.
"We listened to the vintage. Silex tells a story, which is just getting richer every year. 2023's mild year is reflected in the wine's linear, mineral style. An elegant nose of toasted almonds and lemon peel leads to a bright, beautifully balanced texture with waxy grip and acidity." - Ben Witchell, Winemaker.
