The Wine The Wine
England
Region:East Anglia
East Anglia might not be the first place you think of for premium English wines, but Norfolk is one of the driest and sunniest regions of the UK, making it perfect for vines. That is why winemaker Ben Witchell has been passionately cultivating Flint Vineyard over the past decade. His Charmat Rosé is like summer in a glass, and it has gained notoriety with wine critics and locals alike. It was the first sparkling wine to be made in the UK using the Charmat method, most commonly used in Prosecco, to create a dry but fruit-driven sparkling wine. Take a whiff and you’ll find aromas of fresh red cherries and raspberries, as well as delicious hints of Victoria sponge cake. The fruit carries into the palate, which is soft and round with effervescence.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Ben Witchell
Ben’s interest in wine began as a desire to learn more about the wines of the world, but it quickly became an obsession, then a lifelong passion. This led him to quit his job in IT and find out how to become a winemaker. Ben wanted to do this properly and soon realised that he would need to study in order to learn the ropes quickly and extensively enough. He moved to Sussex and enrolled into a three-year degree in Oenology and Viticulture at Plumpton College. This greatly influenced his approach to wine, giving him a respect for and fascination of the winemaking science.
After graduating from college in 2012 with a first class degree and achieving awards for Best Research Project and Top Winemaking Student, Ben moved to Beaujolais, France, where he secured his first winemaking post. Here, he learnt how to 'throw out the rule book' and experienced a more intuitive and creative side to winemaking. After two years it was time to return home and begin a new life making wine in England, where he established Flint Vineyard in Norfolk. Since then, Flint Vineyard has flourished. There are now over 26,000 vines covering six hectares, and a state-of-the-art winery allows for wine production at the highest level. Flint has gained a solid reputation for producing some of the best premium English wines.
"This experimental, Charmat-method sparkling rosé has been a roaring success for Flint. We're trying to showcase lots of sustainable, heritage, aromatic varieties that are so well suited to England at their best, including Pinot Noir, Rondo, Reichensteiner, Pinot Meunier, Cabernet Cortis and Bacchus." - Ben Witchell, Winemaker.
