The Wine The Wine
Lebanon
Region:Bekaa Valley
After setting up his winery in 1973, the owner of Château Ka, Akram Kassatly, had his very first vintage catastrophically destroyed by the militia. 32 years later, against all the odds, he returned to his winery and has made Château Ka into a major success! Source Rouge is a flavourful yet classic red wine that intrigues and charms in equal measure. It has a delicate bouquet of red fruits and subtle spice whilst red pepper and soft tannins add to the fruit and fill the palate with hints of liquorice.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Akram Kassatly
Akram Kassatly built his winery in the Bekaa Valley in 1973. Shortly after the first wines were made, Lebanon was engulfed by war. The winery was forced to close and Akram moved into other businesses. Finally, in 2005, he announced that he was going to try again. Today, Château Ka is the only winery in Lebanon to produce wine entirely from their own vineyards. Akram creates both rich, concentrated reds and beautifully fresh, fruity, crisp white wines that are some of the finest in the country.
"This red is made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 10% Merlot, from vines that were all planted in 1998. We hand-harvest in the cool of the morning, and each parcel is then fermented separately. The proportion of Syrah and Merlot is matured for 12 months in old French oak barrels to add complexity and roundness, while the Cabernet remains in stainless steel to retain its varietal fruit." - Akram Kassatly, Winemaker.
