The Wine

Country of origin:

France

Region:

Bordeaux - Lalande-de-Pomerol

It is wines like this which get us very excited at the Virgin Wines office. Due to being the wrong side of an imaginary line that the French have drawn in the ground, this wine comes from the less-well-known appellation of Lalande-de-Pomerol. The other side of this line is the more famous Pomerol appellation, and one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates: Château Pétrus. By being less than 400m up the road from this iconic estate, you get an incredible wine for a fraction of the price (the 2020 vintage of Pétrus will set you back over £4500 a bottle). Château Petites Ranga comes from the 4th generation of the Arpin family and has all the hallmarks of a superb Right Bank Bordeaux. Their old-vine Merlot dominates the blend, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon playing a supporting role. In the glass, dark and red bramble fruits mingle with toasted cedar, clove and leather. It has a pronounced flavour intensity with firm but silky tannins and a very long finish – this wine will age well over the next decade.

The Winemaker

Gaël Arpin
Winemaker:

Gaël Arpin

Châteaux G. Arpin is a family estate led by Gaël Arpin. He is the descendant of the estate founder, Jean-Baptiste Arpin (Gaël’s great-grandfather), who, upon returning from World War I in 1919, purchased 1 hectare of land in Pomerol. This was the beginning of a fine family story that has been going on for 4 generations. Through hard work, Jean-Baptiste developed the estate and acquired vines in Pomerol, Lalande-de-Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. Guy and Sylviane Arpin (Gaël’s grandparents) eventually became the owners of the estate, and in turn passed it down to their son Gérard. His main focus was to increase the quality of the wines, and he invested in modern, high-tech equipment. Today, Gaël (Gérard's son) is the general manager and he works alongside his sons Glenn and Graham.

"Located in the south of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation, the vineyard has a sublime terrior of gravel, sand, clay and limestone. It is a wine with a lot of freshness, silky tannins, with flavours of red and black fruits." - Gaël Arpin, Winemaker.
