Region:Alsace
The dominant variety planted in the recently recognised (2007) Alsace Grand Crus of Kaefferkopf is Gewürztraminer, yet for us it was this 100% Riesling that stood out from the crowd at a recent tasting. It is wonderfully expressive with quite a lot of power and intensity, but it is the natural freshness and balance of the wine that is totally captivating and impressive. With notes of orange marmalade and ripe apricot, it has weight and texture but is thankfully not overtly sweet or cloying. A wine that is ready to enjoy right away but will reward those with a little extra patience handsomely, after a few years cellaring.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Francis Klee
Kuehn was founded in 1675. You'll find the vineyard nestled in the village of Ammerschwihr, west of Colmar. This area has an excellent climate and the varied soils and subsoils give richness to the wine and a great expression of Alsace. Along with the magic touch of the highly skilled winemaker Francis Klee, Kuehn is able to produce an outstanding range of Alsace Wines and Crémants.
"Everything is harvested by hand, and we pick each plot separately when the bunches are at optimal ripeness, but not too overloaded with alcohol potential. We ferment in stainless steel and then leave the wine on fine lees to develop the intensity and richness we desire. We bottle in the following spring and allow it to settle in bottle for a while before release." - Francis Klee, Winemaker.
