The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Valle Central
In the 1960s, Semillon was very popular and widely planted in Chile, but with the rise of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in more recent years the vines have been ripped up and replaced, leaving only a few thousand hecatres remaining. As such we were thrilled when this Semillon was part of the Chilean 2022 vintage tasting - and it was such a standout wine that we bought the full parcel there and then. It comes from rare, low-yielding and intensely flavoured 80-year-old vines from Apalta, within the Colchagua Valley, nestled in the Chilean Coastal Range. The wine is fresh and aromatic, with some mid-palate weight and plenty of lemon barley fruitiness which lingers on the finish.

I have always been compelled to bring out the best in the specific grapes I work with. I like the purity that focus delivers. Intensity of fruit and character are the things that get me out of bed in the morning and there is always more to do and discover.
"These Semillon grapes come from Apalta, within the Colchagua Valley. The vines are located in the transition in between the lower clay soils and the granitic higher areas of the foothills of the Apalta hills. They are not irrigated, and the yields are very low. Apalta is an area with a lot of sun exposure but with good ventilation due to the coastal influence, and it delivers wines with very good structure. That is to say, they are more powerful and intense than usual." - Oscar Salas Steinlen, Winemaker.
