The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Maipo Valley
This wine is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon vines which have a unique ability to transmit their origin at the purest level because they are ungrafted. De Martino carefully tend these ungrafted vines using sustainable farming methods and strive to produce wines with the maximum expression of this special Maipo terrior. With its mild Mediterranean climate and gravel rich soils, it's no wonder this region is world-renowned for its Cabernets. With bold aromatics of cassis, clove, tobacco leaf and graphite which follow onto the tongue, the Ungrafted is certainly up there with the best. There is purity, length and beautifully poised structure to this wine, all thanks to these very special vines at the Isla de Maipo vineyard and the signature De Martino winemaking prowess.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Nicolás Peréz
Nicolás Peréz works alongside the fourth generation of the De Martino family. Although he grew up in Santiago, Chile, during his teenage years he travelled constantly to Chilean Patagonia, where he worked on the culinary project of one of his brothers. This is where he first came into contact with the world of wine, getting to know the different producers that were operating at that time. This experience was key to his decision, at the young age of 14, to become a winemaker. From that moment on, this goal was central to all the decisions he took about his life and studies. Despite his youth, he has gained substantial experience working in different international wineries in California and Australia, before returning to his home of Chile.
At De Martino, the winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the first producer to bottle single-varietal Carménère in Chile, the first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year.
"This wine shows a lively violet colour with fresh and ripe aromas of cassis, redcurrant and violets complemented by notes of tobacco leaf and graphite. The palate is medium bodied with an intense ripe fruit core balanced by very fine tannins, crisp acidity and a long finish. Overall, a classic example of Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon made in a fresh and complex style that will develop for the next 10 years." - Nicolás Peréz, Winemaker.
