The Wine The Wine
France
Region:Rhône
Mourvèdre can be a tricky grape to work with and as such is rarely found flying solo, more often it is used by winemakers as the seasoning in a blend. The one time, which is the case here, that you'll find it as a single varietal wine is when the fruit comes from seriously old vines, some here over a century in age! As the vines age they get less productive but produce small bunches of highly concentrated grapes that are ideally suited to time in oak barrels and a period of extended ageing in bottle. This 2015 release is absolutely delicious, silky smooth and packed with dense berry-fruit character.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Xavier Vignon
Originating from Picardie in the North of France, Xavier is proud of his 'Picard' roots and of his modest origins. His mother is an agriculturist, and his father is a stonemason trained by the craftsman's guild "Les Compagnon du Tour de France". Xavier was brought up the hard way which has given him good, strong values - the love for a job well done, but also a certain contrarian state of mind.
"It has always been my way to hunt out very special old vines and I'm blessed here in the Rhône with what we have to offer. This is a bold and powerful red that I've softened with time in oak and bottle. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it." - Xavier Vignon, Winemaker.
