The Wine The Wine
Spain
Region:Bierzo
This classic Iberian grape is the refreshing gem you have always been looking for from a Spanish red. The winemaker, Norrel Robertson MW, carefully selects the grapes to ensure the purest and ripest fruit is used to truly reflect the essence of Mencia. This results in a wine bursting with the pure Mencia character of soft raspberry and wild berry fruits which succulently give way to as smooth and spicy finish. Enjoy this wine at its best when paired with empanadas or roast turkey.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Norrel Robertson
Having been brought up in Scotland, where he did his apprenticeship at Oddbins in Edinburgh, Norrel embarked on a journey to become a winemaker - encompassing the passing of the Master of Wine exams and then the well-respected winemaking course at New Zealand's Lincoln University. After spells in France, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Chile, Norrel and his family settled in Spain where he owns over 32 hectares of mainly old vine Garnacha, around the village of Villarroya de la Sierra, in Aragon. His company - El Escocés Volante (The Flying Scotsman) - currently produces many award-winning wines, whilst he also still consults in Chile and South Africa."
"Made in a more Burgundian style with whole bunch fermentation, this wine is soft and juicy. Stylistically placed somewhere between Beaujolais and Burgundy." - Norrel Robertson, Winemaker.
