The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Valle Central
Carménère is all but gone from its homeland of Bordeaux as it was wiped out in the late 1800s by disease, and French winemakers didn't replant it because it is notoriously difficult to ripen. However, when it does reach full maturity the resulting wines can be fantastic. Thankfully it has survived in Chile, where it is now the source of some great wines like El Nubarrón. The long warm, dry summers of the Central Valley are ideally suited to cultivate these late developing berries.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Jenny Villalobos
The vibrant, bubbly Jenny Villalobos manages to bring a feminine touch to the robust, flavourful wines that this winery produces as its signature style. Balancing the contrasting visions of the owners - José Manuel Donoso's loyalty to the classic fruit-forward Chilean style with Laurent Teillet's vast experience in France's classic regions - is her passion, and she is doing a mighty fine job of it in our view!
"This wine is one worthy of sharing with friends and we advise allowing the wine to breathe for a bit after opening the bottle. Great care has been taken to bring out the best in the Carménère grapes, expressing their very fruity and quite complex character." - Jenny Villalobos, Winemaker.
