The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Itata Valley
The coastal vineyards of the Itata Valley, located in the southern part of Chile, are thought to be the cradle of the country's viticultural beginnings with vines dating back to 1551. The Cinsault grapes that make this wine are from the 35-year-old Guarilihue vineyard, just 22km from the Pacific Ocean. These vines are ungrafted and farmed using sustainable agriculture, including dry farming (which means no irrigation is used) and ploughing with horses. Nicolás Peréz and Marco Antonio de Martino believe that these vines offer a true expression of this unique place.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Nicolás Peréz and Marco Antonio de Martino
Marco Antonio De Martino is the 4th Generation of the De Martino family to make wines, and he is joined by the young and talented Nicolás Peréz. Their philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the 1st Carménère producer in Chile, the 1st South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year 2011.
"Ungrafted vines are a privilege to farm, and scarce. Their uniqueness stems from their ability to transmit their origin at its purest level. We carefully tend the ungrafted vines that we own, and that have been farmed under sustainable protocols for decades, striving to produce wines from these esteemed areas with maximum expression of the terroir. The vinification follows strict, traditional methods so that the region is further highlighted and not masked." - Nicolás Peréz and Marco Antonio de Martino, Winemakers.
