De Martino labelled and exported Chile's very first 100% varietal Carménère to the UK back in 1996. They had faith that the world would come to adore this noble grape, and their conviction has been rewarded as it is now seen as the flagship grape of Chile! So, 25 years on, to celebrate their hard work and the longstanding friendship with Virgin Wines, they have bottled a single varietal Carménère, picked from their prized family vines, exclusively for our customers to enjoy.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Nicolás Peréz
Nicolás Peréz works alongside the fourth generation of the De Martino family. Although he grew up in Santiago, Chile, during his teenage years he travelled constantly to Chilean Patagonia, where he worked on the culinary project of one of his brothers. This is where he first came into contact with the world of wine, getting to know the different producers that were operating at that time. This experience was key to his decision, at the young age of 14, to become a winemaker. From that moment on, this goal was central to all the decisions he took about his life and studies. Despite his youth, he has gained substantial experience working in different international wineries in California and Australia, before returning to his home of Chile.
At De Martino, the winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the first producer to bottle single-varietal Carménère in Chile, the first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year.
"This limited-release blend celebrates the 25th anniversary since the first Carménère was labelled by De Martino. The family were pioneers and have championed this variety since its early days. In their vineyard in Isla de Maipo, in the prestigious Maipo Valley, Carménère has found its home and enjoys ideal growing conditions. This wine is composed of a selection of different plots from the family vineyard, which have been specially assembled to celebrate this anniversary. Only a limited number of bottles were produced and in the UK this wine is exclusively sold by Virgin Wines." - Nicolás Peréz, Winemaker.
