The Wine The Wine
Spain
Region:Penedès
In converting their vineyards from the typical Penedès high yields, Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio have abandoned all forms of chemical treatment and fertilisers, instead following basic organic practices. Much of the construction and equipment of their cellar is modest and homemade, including building their own tanks. Their production remains small, yet as they identify further small vineyard sites their range has extended to include distinctive wines from the indigenous varietal Xarel-lo, which they choose to do extended fermentation with, using indigenous yeast and it is then left on its lees to increase the richness and complexity of this wine.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio
Winemakers Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio say, "Having studied in Burgundy, we decided that what we wanted in a winery was something small over which we could have absolute control, which we could craft into something really special. And that is exactly what we have done!" Penedès is a premium region in North Eastern Spain, which has long had a reputation, (besides Rioja) for being Spain's most highly regarded production area. Certainly, it is one of the oldest viticultural areas in Europe.
"We allow natural fermentation with wild yeasts within French oak barrels for this wine. After this two thirds of the wine is aged in 700 litre French oak barrels and a third in stainless steel. The final wine has a crisp white fruit and apricot nose with a light nutty element and a Meursault-esque butteriness. The aromas open up and become richer but still perfectly balanced. Dry, soft but fresh acidity. A lovely depth of mineral laced, grassy white fruit with hints of apricot and nuts." - Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrio, Winemakers.
