The Wine The Wine
France
Region:Burgundy - Beaujolais
Fleurie needs no introduction, as the wines are some of the most highly regarded in Beaujolais. But what you might not know is that within Fleurie the 'La Roilette' area is particularly sought after due to its red granite soils, interspersed with clay layers which produce wines that are both minerally and full of charm. Winemaker Bernard Matrat harnesses this natural verve and crafts this wine from vines that are over 60 years old, then part of the vintage is vinified in oak barrels so that the wine remains balanced and shows a good length.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Bernard Metrat
Metrat is a small domaine, owned and run by Bernard and his father-in-law Michel Chevalier. Bernard is a member of Terra Vitis, a renowned environmental certification which advocates environmentally friendly production methods. As such everything is done by hand, from pruning to picking. Although he is not certified as organic, everything is done as organically as possible - treating or intervening only when necessary.
"This wine is fermented in the traditional way, without use of carbonic maceration, and ageing takes place in used wooden casks for six to nine months." - Bernard Metrat, Winemaker.
