The Wine

Country of origin:

Greece

Region:

Macedonia

Assyrtiko is arguably Greece's most iconic wine grape variety, and whilst it is most well-known on the island of Santorini, here is a wonderful example from Northwestern Greece. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level within the viticultural zone of Agios Panteleimon, in the Amyndeon Appellation. Despite the cold winters and warm summers here, the four neighbouring lakes contribute to the creation of a mild continental climate that makes this the perfect spot for these vines. The soil here is also sandy and poor, which sounds like a bad thing – but it is actually perfect for the production of quality wines! The vines have to work harder and put more energy into producing better grapes, resulting in exquisite wines with rich aromas.

The Winemaker

Stellios Boutaris
Winemaker:

Stellios Boutaris

Stellios Boutaris is a fifth generation winemaker and has run the Kir-Yianni family winery since 2002. His greatest ambition is to bring Greek wine to a global audience, highlighting the unique character of the indigenous Greek varieties, such as Xinomavro and Assyrtiko. He has managed to make Kir-Yianni one of Greece's most respected wine brands, with a philosophy centred around the desire for innovation, respect for tradition and true knowledge of the wine, from grape to bottle.

"This wine is made from the great white grape of Santorini, transplanted to Amyndeon in northern Greece. It has aromas of citrus, white fruits and flowers. On the palate, the wine has a linear profile with mineral, stony notes and fresh acidity, supported by a rounded mouthfeel lasting to a long finish." - Stellios Boutaris, Winemaker.
