The Wine The Wine

Region:Rheinhessen
Gently rolling hills rise in the countryside around Weingut Wittmann in Westhofen, but underneath each one are hidden millions of years of sediment under pressure, which have developed into a wide variety of geological formations. You can taste this in the wines. Kirchspiel sits primarily on clay marl with limestone deposits as well as loam composed of weathered limestone. This gives this wine its unmistakeable, spicy and elegant character. Winemaker Philipp Wittmann also works in harmony with nature on his family estate, practising organic and biodynamic viticulture to create this beautifully balanced and natural Riesling. He is very hands-on - from creating his own composted fertilisers to selective hand-harvesting.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Philipp Wittmann
The Wittmanns have been winegrowers in Rheinhessen ever since the 17th century. The experience of over 15 generations and 350 vintages has proved invaluable to the family and Philipp Wittmann now heads up the family estate. He believes that winemaking is the completion of what nature has begun. He makes sure of perfect conditions both in the vineyards and in his cellar, with the ultimate goal of creating a balanced wine every time.
"The Kirchspiel opens up, like an amphitheatre toward the Rhine, and receives the sun's first rays in the morning. Here the vineyards, with their east to southeast exposure, are sheltered from the cold west winds; this provides the Kirchspiel with a choice microclimate. Our vineyards here are planted mainly in the upper portion of the site, with a gradient of up to 30%." - Philipp Wittmann, Winemaker.
