The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Maule Valley
This wine is part of a collaborative project to promote old vine Carignan wines from Maule. It was once a workhorse variety that was used in blends, but Chilean winemakers are now realizing they have a precious resource at their fingertips! The De Martino 'Vigno' is produced from a 70-year-old, dry farmed vineyard called La Aguada. This richly concentrated fruit is handled with care, and the resulting wine is aged for 24 months in large neutral oak barrels. This creates a muscular red with balance and poise.

As winemakers at De Martino it is our role to fulfil their ambition to create wines that reflect their origin. Our philosophy is based on minimum intervention on single vineyards, including several organic and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. We are proud to be the 1st place Carmenere producer, 1st South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year 2011.
"The La Aguada vineyard is very special because of its old, un-grafted vines, and it is one of the closest Carignan plots to the Pacific Ocean. We want to champion the fruit from this vineyard so the blend will always remain predominantly fruit from this single site, with up to 10% added of Carménère, Cinsault and Malbec." - Marcelo Retamal and Eduardo Jordan, Winemakers.
