The Wine The Wine
Spain
Region:Cariñena
Spain's most famous grape variety is undoubtedly Tempranillo, the great grape of Rioja. However, the role of Garnacha should not be underplayed. It helps by adding colour, alcohol and rich raspberry fruit characters to the blends - essential in creating world-class, balanced wines. Here we trek out to the up-and-coming region of Cariñena and let Garnacha fly solo to show us all what it can do. The result of high-altitude vineyards and hands-off winemaking is a heady, vibrant mix of red berry fruit coupled with subtle floral notes. A real taste of true Spanish Garnacha.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Alvaro Campos
Álvaro Campos is the new winemaker at Bodegas Paniza, bringing a fresh perspective and innovative ideas and a solid track record in Spanish wine production. Despite his youth, he has garnered significant experience, working in various wine regions around his hometown in Valencia, including DO Valencia, DO Alicante, DO Utiel-Requena, and DO Manchuela. His versatility and expertise have seen him excel in both small, family-run wineries and larger operations, culminating in his current role at Bodegas Paniza. Here, he leverages his deep knowledge of grape varieties like Garnacha, Syrah, and Viura. Mentored by esteemed winemakers like Pedro Cárcel, Álvaro embodies the new wave of Spanish winemaking talent that has already made a significant mark on the industry.
"Garnacha is the principal grape in my region. It ripens easily but doesn't get too alcoholic or 'fat', so we're left every time with a great, easy-drinking red that works for every occasion." - Alvaro Campos, Winemaker.
