The Wine The Wine
Germany
Region:Pfalz
This is a very well-priced Pinot Gris for the quality in the bottle. If you haven't heard of Pinot Gris, well, you probably have - Pinot Grigio? It's the same grape, but actually not identical in style to its Italian namesake. It does have that trademark clean and bright pear and apple fruit, but this German version from Pfalz has more depth and a touch more richness and ripeness to the fruit on the palate which arms the wine with all it needs to stand up to spicy Asian food with distinction.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Bernhard Schug
Bernhard started making wine with his friend Ernst Loosen in the late 1980s. He is passionate about his winemaking as well as his own personal garden at home. His years of experience have taken him through all types of vintages in Germany, and drawing on this experience he can help direct the work in the vineyard or the method of fermentation and/or aging to create consistently great wines that are showpieces for the varietals they represent.
"Pinot Gris has a long tradition in the Pfalz region. In fact, it is likely that it was here that the variety was first used as a single varietal wine. Johann Wolf Pinot Gris is made in a full-bodied, dry style with fresh, unoaked fruit and a crisp texture. The fermentation is done in stainless steel to preserve freshness and enhance the vibrant fruit." - Bernhard Schug, Winemaker.
