The Wine The Wine
Italy
Region:Veneto
Italy really is the home of creative winemaking techniques that can give the same grapes a wildly different style. Valpolicella is the beacon of this philosophy. The much coveted Amarone uses partially dried grapes, which adds concentration to the wine but cost too, due to the much lower yield. Once the wine is made, out come the skins and in they go to the ripasso wine. Here they give the wine some of that rich, dense fruit character nicely balanced by the super-fresh base wine expertly made by La Dama.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Gabriele Dalcanale
My name is Gabriele Dalcanale and my passion for grapevines and wines started while attending the college of agricultural studies in my hometown Trento. It continued at University of Padova, where I specialized in oenology and, later, after my graduation, during a year as a researcher at the same institute. After university, I spent a few years working for the well-known Cantine Ferrari in Trento and, later, for Cantine Lenotti, a major winery in the area of Bardolino, near Lake Garda. It was in 2006 that my wife and I began to work on setting up our own business in Valpolicella. With the support of my father in law Giampietro, who immediately believed in our project, we bought the land and built a new modern winery, LA DAMA. Since then we never looked back, putting all our passion and dedication into what we do, from cultivating our vineyard and working in the cellar, to promoting and selling our products.
"Smooth and elegant, with hints of ripe cherries, black berries, exotic spices, cloves, nutmeg and traces of damp pipe tobacco. The sensation it gives in the mouth is soft, vivid and refined." - Gabriele Dalcanale, Winemaker.
