The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Maipo Valley
The grapes for this wine come from the De Martino family’s vineyard in Isla de Maipo. This area enjoys a mild climate with a coastal influence, and the vineyard itself sits on the rocky soils of an old tributary of the Maipo River. This is the perfect location for Carménère to thrive, so, in 1992, the vines were planted and it was these grapes that were used in 1996 for the very first single-varietal Carménère exported from Chile, making it an important part of Chilean wine culture and history. Today, these vines deliver stunning wine with purity and concentration. It pulses with black fruit, intense but delicate spice and some lovely tannins that are both soft and deliciously grippy.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Nicolás Peréz
Nicolás Peréz works alongside the fourth generation of the De Martino family. Although he grew up in Santiago, Chile, during his teenage years he travelled constantly to Chilean Patagonia, where he worked on the culinary project of one of his brothers. This is where he first came into contact with the world of wine, getting to know the different producers that were operating at that time. This experience was key to his decision, at the young age of 14, to become a winemaker. From that moment on, this goal was central to all the decisions he took about his life and studies. Despite his youth, he has gained substantial experience working in different international wineries in California and Australia, before returning to his home of Chile.
At De Martino, the winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the first producer to bottle single-varietal Carménère in Chile, the first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year.
"This wine has fresh aromas of spices, pepper, ripe black fruit and a mineral hint with notes of graphite. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied with intense, ripe fruit. It has a silky-smooth texture, balanced by elegant tannins and fresh acidity. It has depth and weight in the mouth, along with a very long finish." - Nicolás Pérez, Winemaker.
