The Wine

Country of origin:

Chile

Region:

Itata Valley

In a world packed with technology and modern advances it seems slightly odd to bring back almost pre-historic methods of winemaking. However, that's exactly what the guys at De Martino have done. They've been on a mission over the last few years buying up old earthen jars, amphora or Tinajas in Spanish, from all over Chile to bring a project to life. This 100% Cinsault is the result. Berry fresh red that is light but juicy has this easy going nature but at the same time is a pretty serious drop.

The Winemaker

Nicolas Perez
Winemaker:

Nicolás Peréz

Nicolás Peréz works alongside the fourth generation of the De Martino family. Although he grew up in Santiago, Chile, during his teenage years he travelled constantly to Chilean Patagonia, where he worked on the culinary project of one of his brothers. This is where he first came into contact with the world of wine, getting to know the different producers that were operating at that time. This experience was key to his decision, at the young age of 14, to become a winemaker. From that moment on, this goal was central to all the decisions he took about his life and studies. Despite his youth, he has gained substantial experience working in different international wineries in California and Australia, before returning to his home of Chile.

At De Martino, the winemaking philosophy is based on minimal intervention on single vineyards, including sustainable farming and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. De Martino is proud to be the first producer to bottle single-varietal Carménère in Chile, the first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year.

"The use of amphora pots allows us to create a truly unique wine. Fresh, vibrant and filled with berry fruit flavours." - Nicolás Peréz, Winemaker.

Customer ratings

Lovely, fruity wine with quite a hoppy aftertaste. Really enjoyed this.

Superb red wine with character and strawberry and cherry flavours. A medium dry dark red medium bodied red .

Off putting colour, looked unappealing and tasted sour. Not one to recommend at all.

Sour, way pass it's time, the old vines are clearly no longer producing great wine, no need pretending. Suspicious and poorly executed vinification.

Couldn't decide if this was flawed or not. Looked ok - purple with a crimson rim, smelt good - floral, mainly violets, but on tasting it does have a sourness, almost citrus rather than berry fruit, coupled with an intense earthiness. Finishes with a lingering taste of pilsner lager which is unexpected and unpleasant.
