The Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay are proving to be rather special. Pioneering winemakers like John saw the latent potential of this stony soiled spot on New Zealand's north island, snapping up some wasteland back in the late 1980s. The area is now realising that potential delivering some very fine reds. This tiny batch Syrah is dark and concentrated with layers of black fruit, spice, tar and smoke. It will age gracefully but you can of course and should drink it now.

"The wine has a masculine powerful bouquet with exotic aromas of roasted raspberry and blackcurrant, violets, white pepper, cedar and Moroccan spice. A dry wine on the palate with a dense core of black plum, dark cherry and spice. Ripe firm tannins and toasty oak complete the many layers to this wine. Rich and powerful the wine has a long finish."
