Going all-out? You need the stunning La Grande Annee from one of Champagne's most famous houses: Bollinger. Their 2014 release is nothing short of amazing. An intense Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend, crafted from only Grand Cru and Premier Cru fruit. A lovely, aged gold colour in the glass. A nose concentrated by hazelnuts, apples, brioche and delicate cinnamon spice. An exceptionally smooth palate, perfectly balanced between depth and freshness. Best enjoyed with grilled fish, roast lamb or Comte cheese.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Denis Bunner
Originally from Alsace, Denis Bunner has always had a passion for Champagne and joined Maison Bollinger as Assistant Cellar Master in 2013. Today, after taking over the cellar from his friend and mentor Gilles Descôtes, he is the chief winemaker. Denis is tasked with the mission to maintain the outstanding quality of Maison Bollinger while driving innovation. He says that one of his most memorable moments was being able to taste a magnum of Bollinger Vintage 1905, and when he’s not living and breathing Champagne, you can find him on his mountain bike enjoying the outdoors.
"La Grande Année 2014 is an assembly of 19 crus, mostly in Aÿ and Verzenay, for the 61% Pinot Noir, and Chouilly and Oiry for the 39% Chardonnay.
Fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels and the wine is aged, sealed with a natural cork, for more than twice the time required by the appellation. It has a precise and fruity nose with a slight scent of sea air. Aromas of cherry and lemon mingle with quince and bergamot. Then notes of hazelnut, almond, peach and mirabelle plum complete this wine’s range of aromas. On the palate, the initial sensation is a fine and intense effervescence, followed by a wonderful vinosity and then balanced with delicate acidity. Its very fine texture and sea-air finish bring excellent length on the palate, accompanied by a delicate minerality and the complex flavours of orchard fruit and citrus. This wine unfurls gradually, revealing its full potential and intensity." - Denis Bunner, Winemaker.
