Marlborough seems to have been expertly designed for Sauvignon. The unique growing conditions (or as the French would say "terroir") and the cool South Pacific maritime breezes concentrate flavours in the grape to produce fantastically vibrant wines with incredible fruit intensity. In fact, Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc has been setting the benchmark for Marlborough Sauvignon for years - everyone wants a piece of the magic! But the unique structure and layers of zesty fruit flavours are truly unrivalled.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Jim White
Jim completed his degree in Agriculture and Viticulture at Melbourne University and began his career as Assistant Vineyard Manager at Mt. Helen Winery in Victoria's Strathbogie Ranges. He went on to work in the Yarra Valley and Margaret River. Having worked his way across Australia, Jim moved to New Zealand in 2011 joining the Cloudy Bay team as company Viticulturist. His attention to detail, and the care and effort he and his team invest in the vineyards ensure the fruit is of the highest calibre for each and every vintage. In 2018 Jim became the Cloudy Bay Technical Director, with oversight over both the viticultural and the winemaking aspects of the business. He is responsible for delivering the best wines of Marlborough, leveraging his viticultural expertise while continuing to expand the brand reputation through presence in the markets. Beyond the vineyard he is likely found in the Marlborough Sounds donning a wet-suit and a dive tank to dive for fresh seafood or cooking local wild game meat to share with wife Nikki, their children Charlotte and Joshua, and friends.
"Fruit was harvested during the cooler night and early morning temperatures. Grapes were de-stemmed and transferred straight to tank presses within hours of picking. Free run and lightly pressed juice was cold settled for 48-72 hours, then racked and inoculated with yeast. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature to preserve freshness. At the blending bench, only components presenting a true expression of their vineyard site were considered. This Sauvignon Blanc is an elegant aromatic wine with appealing fruit and crisp acidity." - Jim White, Winemaker.
