Pinotage is widely renowned as the grape of South Africa. This Pinotage hails from a single site in a desert-influenced location of Swartland. Whilst its searing sun coaxes the grapes to perfect ripeness, the cooling breezes imbue the fruit with great depth and flavour. A bold Shiraz with notes of ripe blackberries, plums, and a hint of peppery spice and a flavour-packed palate with dark cherries and blackcurrants playing the lead, while subtle notes of chocolate, vanilla, and a whisper of smoky oak add depth. The Pizo series is all about varietal character. The location of the vineyard, its altitude and the soil type all play an important role in allowing the fruit here to express everything it can and should. The long days of Spanish summer sunshine mean the fruit can gradually but thoroughly ripen. The altitude keeps the temperature in check so there's no chance of over-ripeness. And then there's the slate-rich soils which give the wine a clear and defined structure with a mineral texture to the palate.

We commissioned this wine from our winemaking team in Oz to push the limit on the massively popular Albacore red and they have delivered in spades. This lavish creation has all the hallmarks of a top wine; beautifully textured, layered and lush fruit that fills the mouth, as well as a classic Aussie richness of fruit. It will also cellar well for at least a decade leaving you, at the end (should you make it), with a much more gastronomic and complex beast. Try it (at any time) with rare beef.

As a result, this wine is perfectly balanced and harmonious. A great tipple to be enjoyed chilled in the sun.

When you turn it down from 11 and aim for a solid 8 you can really appreciate the flavour profile of this classy grape variety. We don't put anything under our huge 'Black Pig' label unless it really is the cream of the crop, so expect no pulled punches here. This wine bridges the gap between New World fruitiness and Old World elegance. Plenty of stone fruit character with a freshness that belies the warm clime.

El Zumbido ('the buzz') is a local nickname for the wind that whistles through the vines up in the hills of Cariñena. This wind is critical to the style of this Viura. Ripened well in the Spanish sun, the grapes develop lovely peach aromas backed up by pear. But it's the El Zumbido that keeps the wine from becoming overripe and sticky, delivering an integral freshness that completes a very moreish wine.
