This lively number virtually leaps out of the bottle the second you pop the cork. The nose is boisterous and hearty, with blueberry and mulberry tones, the palate is bright and cheery with masses of energy and deeper notes of spice and coffee. Fresh, young reds like this need calming down with well-chosen food and so consider the heavenly repertoire of Italian dishes you can't go wrong. This is sophisticated wine, not mass-produced nonsense, made purely with you in mind. And it's a knockout.

In its flavour profile, Cinsault (or Hermitage as it was originally known) tastes like a smoky Pinot Noir, and these two varietals are the parent grapes responsible for the creation of South Africa's most revered red grape, Pinotage. From its very terminology, 'dryland' indicates challenging terroir but vines and roots work harder to extract more from the soil. Furthermore, bush vines naturally expel lower yields, which in turn aid the concentration of fruit and ultimately, the wine's intensity. Billy Bosch is highly drinkable with black cherry at its core and subtle floral overtones. To complement its mineral-led backbone, try guinea-fowl and braised kale. This Cinsault is also going to work well with Toulouse sausages and parmentier potatoes.

Tuffers' Tipples are all selected by Phil himself, with the assistance of our Wine Buyer, Andrew Baker. During Phil's first Ashes tour of 1990-91, he and a few of the England team headed down South of Perth to Margaret River. He was blown away by the beautiful landscapes, stunning climate and, most importantly, the delicious wines! He particularly enjoyed the Shiraz, so now 30 years on, Phil is excited to have his own wine from the region. It has a highly expressive palate with mixed berry fruit, juicy and balanced tannins, with white pepper spice providing great length of flavour on the finish.

Purity is what this wine is all about. Only organic grapes are used, harvested at night to concentrate the aromas and flavours. Once in the bodega a natural fermentation ensues - started by the natural yeast flora in the winery. Cool fermentation then allows the maximum fruit flavours to be extracted, before allowing it to warm up to draw out vital tannins which give weight on the palate. No oak is used during this process. This means that nothing obscures the pure essence of these very special Rioja grapes.

Nestled between the Olifants River Mountains to the west and the Cedarberg Mountains to the east, the Piekenierskloof Valley is where these three European grape varieties have found a new home within South Africa. Bold and brooding Tannat has roots in Southwest France, Tempranillo is considered the King of Spanish grapes, and Tinta Amarela (aka Trincadeira) has been making rich, fruity reds in Portugal for years! By blending this trio of grapes together, winemaker Ryno Booysen has managed to create a decidedly Spanish feel on the palate with sumptuous red fruits bound together by woody notes. An ideal easy drinking wine and a great example of the diversity of wines South Africa has to offer!

Often overlooked, Cinsault is most famously used in Southern Rhône wines, including the iconic blend: Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In the vineyards of the Western Cape we found this little number, crafted to perfection by Ryno Boosyen to showcase this grape in all its glory. Cinsault is somewhere between Grenache and Pinot Noir in style, making it a great Tuesday night tipple. Bursting with ripe raspberry, violets and plum fruit, with a lick of warming spice on the finish.

Our Benevolent Carménère from Chile is rich and ripe with inviting blackcurrant and blueberry on the nose and palate with a subtle but refreshing mint leaf character that works wonders for drinkability! It's the perfect demonstration of why Chile has become the undisputed world champion of the Carménère grape. It's a "great by the glass" wine or pair with hearty home cooked classics.

The "LOTE" range are all followed by a number, not just selected at random, but chosen to highlight an important backstory about each wine. 96 represents the first vintage the De Martino family bottled and labelled a wine as a varietal Carménère, the first estate to do this in Chile, setting out their stall that Carménère should be championed for its unique characters and not hidden behind the popularity of Merlot. A mouth coating and juicy red which is very gastronomic and pairs well with pan fried duck breast.
De Martino Lote 02 Limarí Valley Pinot Noir 2021

The fussiest of all grape varieties without question is Pinot Noir. It needs very specific conditions to thrive. A cool climate, just enough water and it adores limestone soils. Thankfully for us and the De Martino family Chile's Limarí Valley has the perfect climate and soil combination, the only issue here is rainfall, but this can be managed thanks to a few well positioned lakes. A wine with open strawberry fruit, a little menthol character and great freshness - a very precise Pinot Noir.

Named after the five-pointed star shape of the Castle of Good Hope on Cape Town's foreshore, this South African classic comes from ancient, mineral-rich vineyards which are cooled by the coastal breezes. This fruit-filled Shiraz displays ripe damson and cherry fruit flavours, a hit of spice and a firm satisfying touch to the finish.

Ventoux in the Southern Rhône is a source of great value, easy-going reds. The name 'Herbes Blanches' comes from a hillside near the Domaine where the vegetation consists primarily of white flowers, providing inspiration for the name and unique label design. The superb structure ensures this wine ages gracefully over the next 12-18 months, developing additional spicy, savoury aromas. Still incredibly charming right now, showing bright fruit and delicious intensity. Great with grilled meats!
Black Flag Winemakers Shiraz Touriga 2020

Crafted without any constraints or compromise, this offering was made from a few very high-quality Shiraz parcels, sourced from some of the very best plots in the McLaren Vale. These were harvested separately and blended post ferment, when a small proportion of Touriga Nacional was added to give the wine some added density and enhance the silkiness of the tannins on the finish. Although this grape variety is often associated with Portugal, the Australians were producing wines from this grape long before Shiraz gained traction. However, the two grapes make an impressive union in this small-batch bottling.
