Chile is a land of ice and fire. The four seasons are very marked, with cold and rainy winters - and dry, prolonged summers without rain. Luckily, in spite of these blazing summers which help to ripen the grapes, the vines remain watered by the cool snow melt flowing down from the mountains. This makes for beautiful wines like this Merlot, which has a deliciously fresh character due to the coastal vineyards where the fruit comes from.

This red comes from one of our favourite wineries out in South Africa, run by the tenacious Alecia Boshoff. With every vintage, her Swartland wines have been getting more and more exciting: tighter, more controlled, more expressive and with the accent on natural balance. After sampling this supple Shiraz and Cinsaut blend we snapped it up - it comes from a small batch fermentation that Alecia was experimenting with. It shows incredible balance whilst still showing the character of each varietal.

There are many things to say about the wonderful charms of Barbera. From its native home in Piemonte there are a plethora of beautifully-made wines that shriek berry juiciness, and possess great balance too. And this version, from Swartland, has similarly direct appeal. It offers a lovely acidity and freshness that skewers all the way through its bright, intense cherry core. It is also an extremely versatile wine when it comes to food pairing. The concentrated sweet fruit makes it an ideal accompaniment to fragrant spiced dishes like chicken marinated in ras el hanout, and the light tannins and natural acidity will sit beautifully against an earthy mushroom risotto.

This wine does not disappoint - combining brilliant winemaking from Nadia Engelbrecht, top coastal vineyards, and the classic Bordeaux combination of Cabernet and Merlot. What's not to love? Flavour-wise, it's a turbo-charged ride through jammy blackcurrant, plum and cherry, with spicy cinnamon hints. A really joyous, full-throttle red, confidently expressing the best that South Africa can do.

This Mendoza beauty is made from 3 separate parcels of Malbec: one close to the town, one on the valley floor and one on the sought after slopes of Mount Tupungato. All are long-established, family owned sites. They are then masterfully blended by Stephen resulting in a wine choc-full of ripe blueberry and bramble fruit with a dash of spice, a rich mouthfeel and a beautifully long finish.
