  • These old vines produce a very limited amount of highly concentrated fruit and Xavier expertly transforms that into a sensational vin rouge.
  • Plenty of food options to go with but keep the flavours on the powerful side so they can handle the intensity of the wine!
  • Good options include - lamb and apricot tajine, braised rib of beef, stuffed courgettes with spicy rice and, of course, mature cheeses.

The Wine

Country of origin:

France

Region:

Rhône

A deep and sinuous red wine, produce from a collection of parcels of fruit that winemaker Xavier Vignon has unearthed in the south of the Rhône Valley. All the grapes are hand harvested from vineyards that are a minimum of 80 years old, which in vine terms, are about as old as you can get! You'll find lots of dark berry fruit, earthy undertones and the high abv% gives the wine a lovely shine to the long and spicy finish.

The Winemaker

Xavier Vignon
Winemaker:

Xavier Vignon

Originating from Picardie in the North of France, Xavier is proud of his 'Picard' roots and of his modest origins. His mother is an agriculturist, and his father is a stonemason trained by the craftsman's guild "Les Compagnon du Tour de France". Xavier was brought up the hard way which has given him good, strong values - the love for a job well done, but also a certain contrarian state of mind.

"I'm very proud of this blend, it is one that captures the essence of the venerable old vines we have here in the south of the Rhône Valley. A dense wine with masses of fruit and plenty of complexity and structure." - Xavier Vignon, Winemaker.

Customer ratings

This was delightful. Raspberry and plum on the nose, with a huge mouthful of fruit inside a punchy Bordeaux-like tannin structure. Really rich. Marginally drying on the tongue, which made me consider four stars, but I'm feeling generous and ordering more.

I do quite like a granache, however, with the build up to this exciting blend I found acidity, sour, and a take of chemically endured alcohol that didn't sooth my pallet. Pull back on the 15%alcohol as it doesn't do the fruit any favours. It needs to apologise to its French oak and blame the polyphenolic concentration
