Zeledonio's young Rioja is as modern as they come, with focus firmly on the purity of the exceptional Garnacha of this estate. It's a grape that has really been embraced by the new wave of winemakers, especially in Spain, and Rioja is home to some of the truest expressions. Crafted from 100% estate-grown grapes, all hand-harvested in small batches to ensure they are in perfect condition upon arrival at the winery. 95% Tempranillo with the lesser-known of the Rioja varietals, Mazuelo, making up the rest. A long ageing process in top-notch French and American barriques, and in the bottle, respectively, before being released at optimum readiness to drink. That's not to say it won't provide excellent drinking for years to come. Like most Riojas - pair with food to get the full enjoyment.

Manzanos is a real champion of Graciano. So much so that they can boast the oldest Graciano vineyards in the world. The Targa Graciano loves the clay-limestone soils here where it can develop its natural robustness but not without some mineral elegance on the palate too. Black fruit and bramble on the nose with clove spice and a slight hint of liquorice, this is more savoury than sweet, making it a cracking accompaniment to all things charred, from red meat to veg.

Although Rioja can, and often is, a blend including Graciano and Garnacha, such was the purity of the Tempranillo fruit available from this vintage that we just let the Queen of Rioja fly solo. We let it soften in oak barrels, plus much needed bottle time, to yield a finished wine with all the virtues a good Rioja needs; attractive deep ruby colour, intense aromas of wild berries, spice and cocoa, smooth tannins and long-lasting enjoyable taste.

Fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature allows for gentle extraction of colour and the retention of freshness. It's not widely known that the carbonic maceration technique (more commonly associated with the bright and jolly Beaujolais style) is actually very traditional in Rioja. We associate Rioja with big, heavy reds, and it's no surprise as that's the style that most often graces our homes and dinner tables with its presence in favour of the brighter and lighter carbonica style. Abel's a purist and works in a traditional way so the Jarrate is the typical expression of what the locals drink!
