Around equal distance between Adelaide and Melbourne lies this family-owned collection of superb vineyards and a state-of-the-art winery where their exquisite, pure, honest wines are brought to life. Borrowdale is a careful balance of spicy Shiraz and blackcurrant-laden Cabernet. It'll go down a treat with a spicy sausage stew, mac and cheese - and of course a summer barbie!

This red comes from one of our favourite wineries out in South Africa, run by the tenacious Alecia Boshoff. With every vintage, her Swartland wines have been getting more and more exciting: tighter, more controlled, more expressive and with the accent on natural balance. After sampling this supple Shiraz and Cinsaut blend we snapped it up - it comes from a small batch fermentation that Alecia was experimenting with. It shows incredible balance whilst still showing the character of each varietal.

There are many things to say about the wonderful charms of Barbera. From its native home in Piemonte there are a plethora of beautifully-made wines that shriek berry juiciness, and possess great balance too. And this version, from Swartland, has similarly direct appeal. It offers a lovely acidity and freshness that skewers all the way through its bright, intense cherry core. It is also an extremely versatile wine when it comes to food pairing. The concentrated sweet fruit makes it an ideal accompaniment to fragrant spiced dishes like chicken marinated in ras el hanout, and the light tannins and natural acidity will sit beautifully against an earthy mushroom risotto.

El Sabio Pinot Noir 187ml 2021

We were on the hunt for an excellent Pinot Noir and it was at an extensive tasting with the super-talented Oscar Salas at Vinña Santa Rita that we finally found it. El Sabio is made with superb, full-blooded fruit from the Valle Aconcagua region. It has sweet cherry charm and, although it has typical varietal softness, a small proportion of it was matured in older American and French oak to add roundness and generosity to the wine.

Florel Malbec 187ml 2020

Malbec has become an iconic Argentinean wine but this grape actually originates in France, which is where winemaker Stephen Huse studied oenology and worked for iconic Bordeaux estates such as Châteaux Margaux and Mouton-Rothschild. This wine combines French style finesse and Argentinean weight.
